Is this your idea of an Eco Honeymoon?

Simone was invited to Costa Rica with her husband Rich to experience the Cayuga Eco Honeymoon. We asked her to send us a note on how it went.  They chose Finca Rosa Blanca Coffee Plantation and Kura Design Villas as their honeymoon spots.  Is this what you have in mind when you think of an eco honeymoon?

After a year of planning, our wedding day was finally here”¦and then it was gone! Suddenly you realize you are sitting with family and friends at your Sunday morning sendoff brunch and you both have shiny new rings on your fingers. Before panic strikes that the fun is all over, you remember”¦.your honeymoon is around the corner, so all is well in the world!

We left on Tuesday morning, following our Saturday night wedding. This gave us couple of days to spend time with our guests who traveled around the world to celebrate our big day. By Tuesday, still on cloud nine, we were ready to be alone and enjoy the first time out as a married couple.

Kura only has six rooms. All have spectacular views to the Pacific Ocean.

After extensive research, we chose Costa Rica for our honeymoon, and our first stop was Kura Design Villas in Uvita. This was truly one of the most amazing destinations we have ever been to. We would rank this as a top luxury beach resort, even better than the resorts we have visited in the Maldives, Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. And from NYC it is only a 4 hour flight (vs some of our other trips which were 36+ hours travel time)! The intimate size of the resort (6 Villas, for a maximum of 12 guests), the mind-blowing views, and the amazing service, makes it the perfect destination to honeymoon. Another HUGE perk at Kura is that children are not allowed at the resort, which guaranteed a relaxed and quiet resort. The last thing you want to deal with on honeymoon are screaming kids at the pool or restaurant.

We found online reviews so helpful in making our travelling decisions, so we have summarized all aspects of the resort below”¦we hope this helps you with your planning and journey!

Getting There: We chose to drive in a rental car from SJO. It was about 3.5 hours, and it was fun to see the Costa Rican landscape. Once you get to the dirt road off the highway which leads you up the mountain to Kura, however, it gets a bit tricky. If you don”™t have a good 4×4 rental or are unsure of driving up very steep dirt roads, have the hotel pick you up at their lower parking lot ““ it will be their pleasure. Don”™t worry though, once you get to the top, your delicious welcome drink and one of the top views you will ever see in your life will be waiting for you. When we go back next time, we will probably arrange for someone from the hotel to pick us up at the airport. There is also an option to take a short flight from SJO to a local airport only 50 minutes from Kura.

Room: All of the rooms are stunning!! The views are fantastic and the best we have ever seen in a resort. The attention to every detail and all of the glass (instead of solid walls) makes you feel like you are part of nature”¦truly amazing! We spent a few nights in the Suite Villa, and the other nights in the Infinity Villa. The 2 rooms were very similar, and both were spectacular. Housekeeping did a great job and made sure to come whenever we were out of the room, and they never bothered us while we were sleeping or relaxing in the room. Furniture was modern and felt very new and clean. The bathroom products were fabulous, and the double shower overlooking the magnificent view of the forest/beach below was out of this world. We ended up taking an afternoon siesta every day because it was so serene and beautiful.

Food/Restaurant: The food was top notch, five stars. The sushi in particular was totally unexpected and we must have ordered it as an appetizer for almost every meal. The smoothies were amazing, and all specialty cocktails were awesome. We would often tell the bartender to surprise us”¦and we were never disappointed. We already miss all of the delicious Costa Rican cuisine, with too many highlights to list them all (Mahi Mahi grilled in a banana leaf, rice/beans/plantains at every meal, filet mignon, tuna sashimi, and the list goes on and on”¦).

Pool: Kura has the most beautiful pool we have ever seen! The salt water infinity pool overlooks the most brilliant view below. The staff told us that we would find a surprise when we went into the water”¦and boy were they right! We were shocked to find that there are underwater speakers in the pool. This felt like a true luxury and displayed once again how Kura pays attention to ALL details. It was so romantic to spend the day at the pool on the 2-person lounge beds. We had the option to eat lunch poolside, or just a few steps away at the outdoor restaurant. As if this pool couldn’t get any better”¦at night it miraculously turns into a fire pit, which you get to enjoy during your romantic dinner outside.

The pool is a masterpiece. The perfect infinity pool with highest quality speakers for underwater music and a “fireplace” in the pool. Learn more about our pool at

Excursions: One morning we did an amazing 3 hours excursion to a local waterfall on horseback. The guide was very accommodating and made sure we were on suitable horses for our level. We went through the rain forest and saw a lot of wildlife, and we even rode the horses through rivers! All honeymooners should book this excursion”¦it is a perfect way to start your day before relaxing at the pool for the afternoon.

We also spent some time at the local beach which the hotel provides complimentary transportation to. It was very relaxing and not crowded at all (we only saw 4 other people all day). They resort will pack you a cooler of ice cold beer and fresh fruit, and will set up lounge chairs and an umbrella for you.

Next time we go back we want to go on the half-day boat excursion to nearby islands for snorkeling. You are almost guaranteed to see Whales along the way because they are very popular in this area.

Spa: We spent time at Kura”™s amazing spa almost every afternoon. Adriana is wonderful and keeps a very clean, modern and beautiful spa. It was only built about 1 year ago, and it has the best views and ambiance of any spa we have ever been to. Our favorite treatment was a couple”™s massage/scrub/wrap. This was a 2 hour treatment that left us feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and refreshed. At the end of each treatment, Adriana served cinnamon-infused water which she makes herself. We are going to try to make some ourselves at home!

We could go on and on about this slice of paradise found on a Costa Rican mountaintop. Truly a trip of a lifetime, and we are already planning our next trip back! We would recommend spending 7 nights for honeymoon here because there is so much to do. Also, the luxury, comfort, views, service and food cannot be matched at any other resort! This is a true 5 star winning resort which caters to a romantic couples retreat.

After leaving Kura, we were very sad!  We didn’t want to leave”¦.but our final stop at Finca Rosa Blanca was incredible and exceeded all expectation! This hotel and property is unlike any we have ever visited, and it is truly a hidden gem. It is also conveniently located only 20 minutes from the airport, so it was the perfect spot for us when we had a 6:50 am flight home! We had only planned one evening here”¦which was a HUGE mistake!! We needed at least 3 or 4 nights here in order to take advantage of everything the resort and location had to offer. Details on our stay are below:
Finca Rosa Blanca Coffee Plantation & Inn in the Central Highlands of Costa Rica

Arrival: Nice personalized greeting by the staff members who served us a delicious welcome drink. They took care of parking our car, and made sure we were relaxed and care free once we arrived.

Room: We stayed in the ” Rosa Blanca Suite,” which was an absolute dream! This suite (really a large apartment) was spectacular and had the most character of any hotel we have ever visited. Upon walking in, we felt like we had arrived to a honeymooner”™s paradise. The first level of the Suite included a living room/bar area with private deck, changing room and the most spectacular bathroom. Then you take a spiral staircase up to the second level, which is the bedroom and another bathroom. This circular bedroom elicits 360 degree views, and you feel like royalty in the magnificent bed. It was honestly difficult to tear ourselves away from the suite to tour the rest of the resort because it was so beautiful. By far the most unique and spectacular suite we have ever stayed in! Book this room if it is available!!!

Food/Restaurant: The restaurant was indoor/outdoor and had stunning views of the surrounding neighborhood and San Jose. It was quaint and beautiful and the food was delicious! Because we had a very early flight the next morning, they gave us a boxed breakfast to take with us on the road”¦a very sweet gesture!

Pool: The pool was quiet and we were the only ones there. We also enjoyed the hot tub on the top deck, and we fell in love with the tranquility and privacy of this resort. Since we were on our honeymoon, we really enjoyed the privacy and we felt like we were the only ones staying there.

Our only regret of our trip was that wished we had stayed longer at Finca Rosa Blanca! It is the ideal setting for honeymooners”¦private, beautiful, and centrally located for daily excursions. We plan to come back and spend a few nights here. There are full-day and half-day excursions to nearby volcanoes that you will want to check out”¦as well as white water rafting and hiking adventures. Do not miss this resort!
