Lapa Rios Lapathon in May 2013

As part of their sustainable initiatives, Lapa Rios organizes the ” Lapathon”, an 18km race from Carbonera School to the closest town Puerto Jiménez, on an annual basis, to promote sports, recreation and healthy lifestyles among the members of the neighboring communities. At the same time, this race seeks to fundraise for a social cause that they choose every year depending on the needs identified by the communities and social organizations close to Lapa Rios.

When the event was launched in 2009 and the race took off for the first time on the Osa Peninsula, they decided to use the funds generated to help the Red Cross with the necessary equipment like oxygen tanks, training of medical staff, and medical supplies for the only ambulance of the Peninsula.

Over the years they saw a steady growth in participants and already in the second year over $2,000 was raised which was used to furnish a classroom for speech therapy in the public school of Puerto Jimenez. The success continued and in 2011 we saw a greater involvement of local companies and together we raised $2,700 that helped construct a new dining room for La Amapola Public School in the neighbouring community of Puerto Jimenez.

As the Lapathon grew, our ambitions grew as well, and the funds generated in 2012 were used to improve the only sports ground available in Puerto Jimenez to provide children and the members of the communities with better recreational facilities and a better location for social events. Over the next two years, they will restore and equip the sports ground with materials to invest in the infrastructure to transform the field into a suitable place for sports and leisure. Without the Lapathon, a project such as this would not have been possible!
