The Perfect Family Vacation in Costa Rica

Costa Rica has become a very popular family travel destination.  Easy to get to, safe and lots of fun.  Almost a year ago, we set our to find a family that would help us improve our family vacation experience here in Costa Rica.  We had hundreds of applicants and in the end chose two families that visited us last month around the Thanksgiving holidays.  One from the west coast (Los Angeles) and one from the east coast (New York City) of the United States.   They stayed at three Cayuga Collection Hotels & Lodges.  Finca Rosa Blanca Coffee Plantation Inn located in the Central Highlands, Lapa Rios Eco Lodge on the Osa Peninsula and Arenas del Mar Beach & Rain Forest Resort in Manuel Antonio.  They reported back to have had a wonderful time and provided a lot of very valuable feedback to us.

Here some highlights, lessons learned and ideas for improvement.

beach time in Costa Rica
Getting away from “screens” for a while is something that almost all parents would like their kids to do. Easy to do when you have a secluded beach and the Pacific Ocean with fun waves to play in  at your doorstep.

waterfall in the rain forest
Hiking in the tropical rain forest and exploring wild waterfalls is a great way to get out of your comfort zone and it feels like genuine adventure to kids and adults alike.  Indiana Jones, Tarzan and Superman all in one…

Making Corn Tortillas
There is something for everybody. If some day, you are not up for an outdoor adventure, how about learning how to make corn tortillas with our staff cook?  And yes, you get to eat it as well.  Buen provecho.

Surf lessons in Manuel Antonio
There is no need for excessive planning ahead of time. Activities like surfing lessons (and many others) can be arrange from one day to the next or even the same day.  Family travel does not have to kill spontaneity.

Activities for kids during down time
One suggestion was to provide more activities or things do do during down time or when back at the hotel/lodge after a day packed with activities. Animal charts and a nap are a good start.  We will work on this some more…

waterfall hike
Another recommendation was to make sure that we take special care of the kids during the hikes in the rain forest or on other tours. We have been developing special hikes for kids and will continue to further develop them.

And finally, we were asked to provide more infrastructure especially for kids where they can hang out, be active and meet each other. We will also explore this option in more detail.  The best time to travel would be summer vacation in the months of June, July and August.  Lots of kids vacationing with the parents.
