On Sunday, May 18th, about 140 runners took part in the 6th Lapathon Jungle Race on the Osa Peninsula. This race was first organized by Lapa Rios Eco Lodge in 2009 and ever since has raised thousands of dollars for charitable projects in the Puerto Jimenez area. The funds of those races have helped to equip local schools, help the local Red Cross and clinic and crate a play and sports area for teenagers.
The Lapathon race has become an important event in Puerto Jimenez and last Sunday afternoon several hundred fans cheered on the runners to the finish line. After five years of running a distance of 18 kilometers from the Carbonera School in Matapalo to Puerto Jimenez, this year the distance was cut down to 10 kilometers in order to attract more runners from the local community.
As every year, the children”™s Lapathon was a great success with about 25 kids from the local community racing a distance of 3 kilometers. It was great to see all the parents and relatives support the little ones as they came across the finish line at the soccer field in Puerto Jimenez. The heat and humidity in the air in the Osa Peninsula least affected these young runners as they are used to playing in this natural environment.
Besides being a fundraising event, the Lapathon was started by the Lapa Rios Eco Lodge and its management company Cayuga Sustainable Hospitality not only to raise funds for projects in the local community, but also to promote a more healthy lifestyle among its employees and their families. About 15 of the 57 Lapa Rios participated in the race. Six runners from other Cayuga Collection Hotels participated in the race. Five from Arenas del Mar Beachfront and Rainforest Resort in Manuel Antonio and one from the Grano de Oro Hotel in San Jose.
A special thanks to all the sponsors and supporters that helped raise almost $3,000 of funds that will be used to improve the equipment at the Puerto Jimenez Clinic. The funds will be sufficient to purchase at least two automated external defibrillators and two gynecological stretchers.
